Community Spirit was alive and well in South Mountain on Saturday night! The Mountain Township and District Lions Club hosted its first indoor, sit-down fundraising dinner in over two years at the Mountain Township Agricultural Hall.

The Dinner & Show event featured a steak and BBQ chicken dinner, live music by The Shadowz, trivia and lively conversation amongst neighbours and friends. The sold-out crowd was treated to the Lions’ world-class hospitality, from the smiling faces that greeted you at the door to the warmth you felt when you walked into the room. The event brought in approximately $7,000 and every penny goes directly back into the community.

The Mountain Township and District Lions Club is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The club was issued its charter in 1982, and has done many wonderful things for the community over the past four decades. Every year, the Lions sponsor a road clean-up on County Road 1, starting at Rick’s Gas Bar. This year’s clean-up is happening on Saturday, April 30.

The Lions Club also supports and sponsors local events and organizations, including: Christmas Food Baskets and Snow Suit Fund, Families in Need, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Youth Camps and Exchange, scholarships for high school students, Dundas Manor, Winchester District Memorial Hospital (Ophthalmology Clinic), Friends of the Library, Crime Stoppers, Mountain Township Agricultural Society, Parade of Lights and much more!

The Lions Club’s handiwork is visible throughout the community. Just take a stroll down to the Rick Cauvier Memorial Park and sit under the beautiful new pavilion.

Bob Weagant, coordinator of the event, says the Lions Club has been hosting fundraising dinners twice a year – in the spring and fall - for decades. “The Lions Club motto is that we serve,” he explains.

Saturday’s Dinner & Show was a beautiful example of what can be accomplished when the community pulls together. The next big event being coordinated by the Lions Club is Canada Day festivities in South Mountain. Stay tuned for details!

North Dundas Mayor Tony Fraser, who attended the fundraising dinner with his wife Amy, says it’s wonderful to be able to gather with neighbours again and support the Lions, who do so much for the community.
